U.S. may be a melting pot for people of all ethnicities, but Indians stand out, even more so than the Chinese a lot of the times.

I read up a few articles today on the perception of the market towards immigrants, and India seemed to be at the back of every writer's head, especially when it came down to the professions of dot-coms and doctors.

At this point, I get the feeling that some Americans are spiteful towards Indians, for we seem to have the capability to work harder and act smarter. I read a few opinions complaining about how people from other countries returned to their homelands after several years, and take their capital with them so that America loses its money.

It does seem unfair to me that we gain from this wonderful economy and tolerant culture of America, but do nothing to really give back to the nation. Maybe Indians become entrepreneurs and create several jobs for this economy, or innovate amazing computer chips in the Silicon Valley, or go shopping for overly priced articles at the mall, but they might still want to consider celebrating July 4th with the same fervor as Aug 15th!

heylo...i read this but cant figure out whose side you are on :-?
even the ppl who return back, have they not returned what they got from the US by working hard for those many years?

And for many people...US is not a home, its just a place to come, learn , earn money, and go back to their country...

Hehe..Shreya,don't worry about Indians not giving back what they get,in foreign countries. You know, each and every country knows that they cannot do without the Indian brains, hence, they're so much in demand.Tomorrow,if(A big if) their own countrymen get this smart and hardworking,do you think Indians(Or any expats) will be welcomed? No way...but,there's very less chance of that happening.:)

rightly said amit...not to consider the pain indians have to endure to get to the US, adjust there, etc...

hey guys (literally :-P), your view-points are all valid as far as the economic justification of prospering Indians goes. I would also like to add that we do not milk America and run away, especially since we all pay very high taxes, but Indian Americans do not think much about contributing to the American society. As far as the pain during settling abroad and getting used to its culture is concerned, that is a decision which we make consciously when we immigrate, and it is definitely not a total disadvantage if you learn to incorporate the good aspects of the foreign culture. All I am saying is that since there are several perks available for minorities like us, we should give back to the American culture by volunteering more often for social causes and keep ourself educated as to what we can do for both countries. I would always be an Indian first, but maybe I should also try to be a good samaratin American next.

Hi,Shreya...nice point-about being a good samaritan..but,tell me,would the Americans appreciate?I think they're too proud of their own image to really care. Now,if you talk of Australians, yes, they're warm and appreciative of Indians.Or, Omanis or Bahrainis.Yankees and Brits somehow feel they're obliging the world by deigning to stoop to talk to other community people, don't they?

I do not know if I necessarily agree, Amit. I mean, I have not met Americans who would not appreciate help from others b/c of their ethnicity. But then again, people in NY and CA are deigned as being rude and cocky than the rest of Americans, so I can only talk about Chicagoans :)
